Press Release: Dillsburg American Legion Honored with Charitable Gaming Community Impact Award

Local legislators, veterans, partners, and club members gathered to celebrate the community impact of one of Central Pennsylvania’s largest American Legion posts

DILLSBURG, PA – American Legion Post 26 received a Charitable Gaming Community Impact Award for significant contributions to its community using funds raised through charitable gaming from PlayPA for Charity at a special event on August 31 that welcomed 100 local veterans, community partners, legislators, and club members.

American Legion Post 26 in Dillsburg uses revenue from charitable gaming to source much-needed school supplies for local students, collect food for neighborhood food pantries, host community events, make donations to area police departments and veteran organizations, and more. Organizations supported include Northern York County School District, Warrington Friends Meeting House Cemetery, Carroll Township Police Department, New Hope Ministries, and others.

Post leadership was presented with a plaque and had the opportunity to share with attendees the importance of charitable gaming as a vehicle for community betterment.

“Small games of chance revenue allows us to have the funds to donate to community organizations in need. It’s an honor to be recognized for the work we do every day to help our neighbors,” said Rodney Carberry, American Legion Post 26 Commander.

Attendees also participated in a Q&A session about the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s ruling on skill games, what it means for clubs, and the difference new charitable gaming options like electronic pull tabs could make for their organizations.

Electronic pull-tabs (e-tabs) are a modern electronic version of traditional paper pull-tabs that are already permitted as a Small Games of Chance in Pennsylvania. For charitable clubs, e-tabs could provide a modern, regulated alternative to skill machines while continuing to generate significant revenue for charitable and community purposes. E-tabs are currently legal in 12 states as a fundraising tool for non-profit clubs and those that have installed e-tabs have seen their gaming profits increase substantially.

“We’d be able to do so much more between giving back and also attracting new members if we had more charitable gaming options,” said Carberry. “The way the Small Games of Chance Law is set up really handcuffs us and I hope our legislators can educate themselves on how much more we could contribute to our communities if we had new options like electronic pull tabs.”
